Advice for bands that are just starting out (:

These are just a few pointers that will help your band in the long run!
- Get together for practice regularly (at least once a week should be good!) My band has some problems with this, so yeah, I shouldn't be talking. But the more you practice, the better you'll perform!
- Start a blog for your band! That way, you can keep your fans updated on what you've been doing without the confines of Facebook! If your band has a website see if there's a way you can put a blog on the site! Google Sites and Yola both have this!
- If you have a band member who has problems showing up to practice, record your songs for them to practice to! It doesn't have to be anything professionally recorded; something recorded on a cell phone or iPod will do the trick.
- Play a few cover songs! It's always awesome to have originals, but people like to hear songs they know and love! Also, don't pick all totally obscure songs that nobody knows, like some random Frank Zappa or Nine Inch Nails song. Pick songs that are pretty well-known. Nirvana, The Beatles, Metallica, The Ramones, and Led Zeppelin are always good choices!
- Don't try to call attention to yourself by saying negative things about the band. It'll make you look like some psycho. Try to attract attention in a more positive way, like by promoting the band!
- Post lots of videos of your band jamming out at band practice or at gigs if you don't have any recordings! People want to hear your music! (That's the point of a band, isn't it?)
- Don't hate any other local bands, unless there's a legit reason why you should hate them.
- Put a lot of emotion and passion into your music! When people watch your videos or go to your shows, they want to be able to connect with you emotionally. Write songs about things that really affect you emotionally or pick cover songs you can relate to.
- Start out with small gigs. If you mess up at, say, your first or second gig, and it's a really big show with like an audience of 500, or even a short set at a school dance, you mess up big-time and thus your reputation is in jeopardy. Start out by playing at a friend's birthday party, (I know this sounds really stupid) a family gathering, or play a small set opening for other local bands that are just starting up (like Wilted Roses!) and gradually start playing bigger shows.
